As a place for culture and education, the Latin Quarter was the stage of pivotal political debates that shaped the history of France and its inhabitants. Issues including slavery and colonization were tackled here, causing tumult among Paris' intellectuals. Paris, and especially the Latin Quarter, also played a significant role in the history of jazz. Many of the genre's great musicians, from the USA and elsewhere, performed in the area's bars and clubs. Some of them even moved to Paris, South of the Seine.
