History of Paris' Black Community

Excursions & Unique Place du Panthéon, 75005 Paris
Information
DISCOVER THE LATIN QUARTER'S LINKS WITH FRANCE'S BLACK COMMUNITY.  Your guide Kévi studied the history of the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, specializing in the areas' connections with black communities and movements. On a tour that will take you from the Panthéon to Saint-Germain, he will share his wealth of knowledge on this lesser-known aspect of the neighborhood's past. The Latin Quarter is one of the cultural epicenters of Paris. For several centuries, it has been home to many prestigious universities and institutions. Nowadays, this neighborhood is very popular among tourists but few people are aware of the district's importance in the history of France's black communities. As a place for culture and education, the Latin Quarter was the stage of pivotal political debates that shaped the history of France and its inhabitants. Issues including slavery and colonization were tackled here, causing tumult among Paris' intellectuals. Paris, and especially the Latin Quarter, also played a significant role in the history of jazz. Many of the genre's great musicians, from the USA and elsewhere, performed in the area's bars and clubs. Some of them even moved to Paris, South of the Seine.
